The city of Livorno is pleased to host the match between the Volleyball National Teams of Italy and France, in the frame of the preliminary round of the prestigious World League 2007 and where the final six will be held in Poland. As a matter of fact, the International Volleyball Federation, on the wave of the success of public reached for the match Italia-Cuba for the 2004 edition, has chosen again Livorno as venue for one home match, the first one at home in the pool B, in which there are the Azzurri with France, United States and Japan. Then, Italy-France represents for our city rich on sport passion and tradition, a reason of great proud. A very warm thanks to those, at whatever title, who gave their support for the success of this important sports event.

Info about the city
Livorno was founded in the second half of the sixteenth century by the Medici when, for military and commercial reasons, the fishing village which had grown up round Matilde di Canossa’s keep (Mastio di Matilde di Canossa) rapidly became one of the Mediterranean’s main ports. Reminders of the “Nations”, which contributed to the birth and growth of an important port known throughout the Mediterranean, are to be found in churches, historic cemeteries, archives and food. Guarding the Port is the Fortezza Vecchia (Old Fortress) with its imposing Matilde’s Keep (Mastio di Matilde), connected by internal waterways to the Fortezza Nuova (New Fortress) in the heart of the city. The quarter known as Nuova Venezia (New Venice), built during the 17th century, still preserves some of its original features. Particularly interesting are the Medicean Fossi, a network of navigable canals connecting the warehouses and homes of merchants.
